So when exactly should you consider hiring a private investigator? A very common mistake that people make before hiring a private detective is not consulting a lawyer first. So you think that you have a problem that will need the help of a private detective to solve, the first thing you should ask yourself is, Will the results of this investigation end up either now or in the future in court?
If you answer yes to that question the first thing you should do before hiring an investigator is consult a lawyer. Running out and hiring the first private detective that you can find is going to be a big mistake. Now that you have consulted a lawyer it is important to hire a detective that has all the credentials needed. Such as the proper licensing, and they should be bonded and insured.
The laws of gathering evidence are the same anywhere you go, evidence must be acquired lawfully. This ties back into the fact that you need to have a private investigator that is licensed. Let’s say that your investigative findings does end you up in court, but instead of having a licensed private investigator, you hired an ex cop or detective.
While hiring someone who has a previous detective background is not necessarily a bad thing, a cop not having a private investigators license may come back to haunt you in court. For incense they may decide that evidence acquired by an unlicensed investigator was not acquired lawfully, therefore it may be thrown out and be useless to you.
